Baby Talk

Baby Talk is a way to introduce you and your baby to the wealth of resources available at Darebin Libraries.

Babies and Books

From the time a baby is born it is developing and learning. They see moving objects; listen to the sound of your voice and noise within their environment. They begin to grasp and hold objects and to develop a sense of self-awareness.

What could a six month old learn about reading at this point in time?

  • How to hold a book
  • What's happening in the pictures
  • Turning pages
  • The direction in which the text flows
  • Books can be used to stimulate all the senses through the use of touch,
    sight, sound and smell

By the time a child is six months of age, reading should be a regular part of their daily routine.  Select picture books that contain pictures of familiar objects, people and activities. Between 2 - 3 minutes a day is all it takes to give a child a head start.

If you are not sure when to start reading to your baby or what to select then Baby Talk is for you.

Remember to collect your board book and library bag available free to all new born babies and their parents within the City of Darebin on your first visit to your local Maternal and Child Health Centre.
