Darebin Libraries is getting involved in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea again to help raise vital funds for cancer research and support. You can help by coming along on the day or by making a donation online! Go on... it's deliciously rewarding!

Preston Library will be transformed into a cafe with plenty of hot drinks to ward off the autumn chill, delicious treats and you might even like to have your tea leaves read.

Bring the kids along too. Pre-school storytime will be on at the usual time of 10.30 and will conclude with a special reading of The Very Cranky Bear for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Bar None Exhibition

The aim of this session is to promote interaction between parent and child - and why it is important e.g. language development, memory skills, focus, pre-literacy, resilience, fine and gross motor development and the value of play.

This is an opportunity for the parents of young children to participate in an interactive session and share experiences and expectations.

Bicycle maintenance for beginners

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

If you've ever been stranded with a punctured tyre without the tools or the know-how to fix it, you're probably not keen to repeat the experience! In this basic introduction to looking after your bicycle, you'll learn how to change your tubes and tyres, clean your chain and cassette and look after safety parts, lights etc.

Our presenters from Plenty Cycles will be using demonstration bikes and will also have some parts for you to get hands-on practice with.

Bike racks are available at the front of the library if you'd like to ride and park.

To collect your free book, reviews must be submitted in person from Tuesday 11 November to Tuesday 18 November at Preston, Northcote or Reservoir Library.

Conditions of entry

• Reviews must be for an adult fiction or non fiction book available at Darebin Libraries;

• Reviews must be a minimum of 25 words and must be passionate and personal, as judged by Darebin Libraries staff;

• Entrants give permission for their review to be added to the Darebin Libraries website including their first name and the library where it was lodged;

• Entrants must be 16 years or over;

• Free books available whilst stocks last and must be collected from Northcote, Reservoir or Preston library on 11 November 2008;

• One free book per customer.

Book Launch - Monkey Red, Monkey Blue

Alive with colour and movement, Monkey Red, Monkey Blue is a celebration of food, fun and making a mess! This picture book by local author Nicki Greenberg is perfect for sharing with very young children.

It will be launched by popular author and illustrator Terry Denton, followed by a reading of the book by the author. Young children, parents and fans of cheeky monkeys are all welcome to join us for the launch.

About the author

Nicki had her first picture book series published at the tender age of fifteen and since then has dedicated most of her ink to comics, but has also written and illustrated fiction and non-fiction books for children, and is the creator of graphic novel adaptations of Shakespeare's Hamlet and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.

The show aims to inspire the children to read the nomiated books after seeing them brought to life in this show.

Did you know that Darebin Libraries has been running book sales in partnership with Reservoir Scouts for over 12 years! This partnership really works.

Why? Because we share the workload and the proceeds, and book sale customers reap the benefits.

How? Darebin Libraries staff box up their older or slightly damaged books in preparation for a Reservoir Scout member to pick them up. The library prepares flyers and promotes this tri-monthly event at all their locations. The Scouts set up the deleted titles on trestle tables in their hall the night before. Everyone gets a good night's rest for the 10am start on book sale morning.

If you haven't been to one of these book sales, pencil in the date now!

We often have over 70 book-lovers waiting for the doors to open on the day. Some are regulars. Some bring their own boxes to fill. Every item is a bargain. In 12 years, we haven't changed our prices, despite changes to CPI, interest rates and inflation.

Bran Nue Dae Film Screening

We are celebrating NAIDOC week with a screening of Bran Nue Dae. Filmed in the desert-scapes of Western Australia's Broome, this exuberant musical road movie is studded with stars of the stage and screen including Jessica Mauboy, Ernie Dingo, Missy Higgins and Geoffrey Rush.

We are combining two great joys; the magic of literature and the comfort of knitting.

Bring along your knitting needles and wool and listen to a librarian read aloud as you knit a square to contribute to a blanket that will be donated to the Knit One Give One charity. Last year over 200 knitted squares were donated to Save the Children by participants who attended sessions, which were sewn into blankets and sent to vulnerable children around the world.

Please bring 8 ply wool and 4mm knitting needles, we'll supply the entertainment and light refreshments!

We are celebrating the National Year of Reading by combining two great joys; the magic of literature and the pleasure of knitting.

Techniques covered will include:

Stamping - learn how to rubber stamp and emboss to create greeting and gift cards

Day of the Imprisoned Writer

The Day of the Imprisoned Writer is an annual, international day intended to recognize and support writers who are imprisoned, tortured, threatened, attacked, exiled or even murdered for the peaceful practice of their professions.

PEN International* established the date more than 30 years ago to honour these courageous writers.

Darebin Libraries has set up an Empty Chair at Preston and Northcote Libraries to remember these courageous writers and to highlight the importance of freedom of expression in a society that protects and respects the human rights of all citizens.

Doris Pozzi - author of the book Edible Weeds and Garden Plants of Melbourne - will be sharing her passion for edible weeds in a talk at Northcote Library.

In this informative presentation Doris will discuss the most common edible weeds in Melbourne, their nutritional properties and how to prepare them in the kitchen. Doris will also cover how to avoid poisonous 'look-alikes' and tips for foraging safely.

Doris grew up foraging in an Italian family here in Melbourne. As an adult she later 'grew' her knowledge of these wonderful plants through years of research and her permaculture studies. Doris and her book have been featured in articles in The Age and the Herald Sun and she has been interviewed about her book and edible weeds on Radio National, 3CR and 3AW.

There is so much free food all around us and with escalating supermarket prices and concerns about the chemicals used to grow the foods we purchase, now is a great time to learn about the wonders of edible weeds and garden plants!

Author talk with Sandy Jeffs

Sandy Jeffs has lived with schizophrenia for 34 years and this has informed much of her writing. She has published five books of poetry and her memoir, Flying with Paper Wings, was short listed for the 2010 Age Book of the Year. It was also named Book of the Year for 2010 by SANE Australia.

Sandy's writing has covered the disparate subjects of madness, domestic violence and the trials and tribulations of playing midweek ladies' tennis. She lives on the outskirts of Melbourne with her friends and animals.

Sandy is one of this year's nominated Summer Read authors.

Once upon a time... in days of old, fairytales were told from adult to adult.

This oral storytelling tradition has left us with a legacy of much-loved books. Join us for an evening of readings of fairytales for grown-ups with Maggie Millar to celebrate the launch of the National Year of Reading.

You might recognise Maggie from TV series such as The Sullivans, Prisoner and Neighbours, along with her work in theatre companies such as MTC, Malthouse and La Mama.

Her readings will take us back to the enchantment and darker origins of fairytales.

Local historian Paul Michell will share his unique insights into their various histories and architectural styles including art deco, Victorian, Federation and Californian bungalow as he guides you on this walking tour of South Preston.

N.B. The tour takes approximately 90 minutes. There are no public conveniences or shops en-route so please bring anything you may need, including water. On-street parking is available.

In the case of wet weather, the walk will be held the following Saturday on 11 December.

Actress, singer, writer and more recently, marriage celebrant, Jane Clifton had a classic army brat upbringing, constantly on the move as the family followed the postings of her English officer father from Gibraltar to England, Germany to Malaysia and eventually to Australia. Always the new kid in town, Jane became adept at fitting in anywhere.

As an adult, living in the fast-moving worlds of anti-war demos, women's lib, experimental theatre, rock 'n' roll and TV, she kept up the family tradition of changing addresses without so much as a backward glance. Jill Jolliffe has been following the Balibo Five story for 34 years. She witnessed the first incursions by the Indonesian troops in September 1975, reported the death of five colleagues at Balibo in October and was evacuated from Dilli days before Indonesian troops attacked the capital in 7 December 1975.

Balibo, previously published as "Cover up" and soon to be released as a feature film starring Anthony La Paglia is the result of 30 years of personal investigation and tireless research.

Jill will discuss her novel "Balibo". Part memoir, part history, this searing book details the events surrounding the murder of the Balibo Five and brings to light details of Australia's role in East Timor's recent tragic history.

We are releasing these much-loved titles in the fiery heat of St Valentine's Day which is also Library Lovers' Day.

Library Lovers' Day has been held for the past few years to celebrate the profession's passion for books. It is held, not coincidentally, on Valentine's Day to give people an alternative to displaying their passion for a solitary person. We think it is more inclusive than Valentine's Day; after all, not everyone has a valentine, but everyone has a passion for at least one book.

New books and coffee tastings

Every public librarian worth their salt complains about the book budget. Of course we want more! More money to buy more books: new fiction titles, more reprints of the classics, more glamorous coffee table books, more reference material, more how-to guides, more, more, more. Well, here at Darebin Libraries we have been judiciously spending the book budget and will uncover its latest bounty on Saturday 2nd July at 1pm. There will be over 200 new books to borrow.

Let the librarian present know what you think about our latest purchases over a cup of tea or coffee. We have invited Friends of Baucau to provide free coffee tastings to our customers at this event. Friends of Baucau is a community project which works with the people of Baucau in East Timor to assist them with re-building their community following independence. An active and ongoing fundraising strategy and a team of dedicated and fully committed volunteers work tirelessly to ensure they have enough funds to maintain their projects and staff in Timor Leste. To raise public awareness, Friends of Baucau provide coffee stalls at community events.

If you enjoy this brew, you can buy 250gm packets of Timor Leste coffee on the day (and anytime at Preston Library) and help support the Baucau district. 50% of the sale of each packet goes to Friends of Baucau. Timor Leste beans are roasted, ground and packaged by Coffee Mio for Friends of Baucau. The beans are the Arabica variety, which are organically grown in Timor Leste.

Learn how to give new life to an old, forgotten book by turning it into an amazing sculpture. Teacher and artist, Julie Proe, will demonstrate simple folding techniques and share creative ideas in this free hands-on workshop where you will turn an old book into a piece of art.

Scot Gardner - Author Talk

Scot Gardner describes himself as pretty feral and says writing novels suits a feral lifestyle because he can write wherever he is.

He is the author of eleven novels, mostly teenage fiction. His books are about dealing with the sad, funny, messy things of life and finding the heart and courage to keep going.

Here's what John Marsden had to say about Scot's book The Other Madonna:

Since starting Rebound in 2005 they have been making journals, sketchbooks, photo albums, diaries, pocket books and bookmarks.
